A Better Stack alternative without the per-seat math

Better Stack grew from uptime monitoring into a full observability platform with on-call, logs, traces and error tracking. If you only need to know when things break and tell your customers about it, UpButler does that part with flat pricing and an API your agents can run.

Written by the UpButler team, so we are biased. Competitor facts checked October 2026 against their public pages; tell us if something changed.

The short version

Better Stack is the stronger choice if you want on-call rotations with phone and SMS, logs and traces in the same product, and you are happy to price per responder. UpButler is the simpler, cheaper choice if what you need is reliable uptime checks, a branded status page and incident communication, with AI help on the writing and a workspace an agent can set up end to end.

Pick UpButler if

  • You need monitoring, a status page and incident updates, not a full observability stack.
  • You want flat plans: members, status pages, custom CSS and on-call included, not priced per seat.
  • You want AI-drafted causes and customer-safe summaries for every incident.
  • Your agents should create and manage everything, starting from an empty account.

Stay with Better Stack if

  • You need phone-call or SMS paging, or richer on-call features than weekly rotations.
  • You want logs, metrics, traces and error tracking next to your uptime data.
  • You want incidents managed inside Slack or Microsoft Teams with dedicated channels.
  • You need SAML SSO, check locations outside Europe, or the compliance tooling of a larger platform.

Two different shapes of product

Better Stack is an observability platform: uptime monitoring, on-call and incident management, logs, metrics, traces, error tracking and session replays, priced per responder with usage add-ons. It is a strong product, and if you want one vendor for all of that it is worth a serious look.

UpButler is deliberately narrower. It answers three questions: is it up, what broke, and what do we tell customers? Monitoring, status pages and incident communication, with every feature reachable from the REST API and the MCP server. No log pipelines, no per-seat licenses, and on-call kept deliberately simple.

Pricing you can predict

On Better Stack, status page polish is sold per page: custom CSS, white-labelling and password protection are each monthly add-ons, and more people means more responder licenses. On UpButler, Starter at $12/month removes our branding from your page. Pro at $29/month includes 5 status pages, custom CSS and 5 members. Business at $99/month raises that to 20 pages and 25 members and adds on-call and real-browser checks. Yearly billing is ten times the monthly price.

Incidents that explain themselves

Every UpButler incident comes with an AI report built from the real check data: likely causes, suggested next steps, and a public summary that leaves out internal details. Recovery adds a post-incident summary. Failures on the same status page within 30 minutes are grouped into one incident, so a database blip that takes down four services produces one story, not four alerts. If you record deploys (API, CLI or our GitHub Action), the report also tells you when errors started right after a release. The summary goes on the status page by default, within the guidelines and banned terms you set per page, and you can edit it, turn it off, or ask the AI to polish your own note instead.

Set up by an agent

Better Stack has an official MCP server, and it is a good one for querying telemetry. UpButler's is built around setup and communication. Plugging in a service is one call, heartbeats are the same call with a period instead of a URL, and an agent without an account can bootstrap a workspace and give its human a link to claim it within 7 days.

Terminal
# One call per service: monitor + status page component
curl -X POST https://upbutler.com/api/v1/services \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $UPBUTLER_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"name":"Checkout API","url":"https://api.acme.com/health","statusPage":"acme","group":"APIs"}'

# Heartbeats: pass periodSec instead of a URL, get a ping URL back
curl -X POST https://upbutler.com/api/v1/services \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $UPBUTLER_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"name":"Nightly backup","periodSec":86400,"graceSec":1800}'

Where Better Stack is ahead

On-call. Better Stack pages by phone call and SMS and has a deeper on-call product. UpButler’s Business plan covers weekly rotations, overrides and escalation by email, Telegram and alert channels, without phone or SMS. Telemetry. Logs, traces, metrics and error tracking next to your monitors. Check locations worldwide, where UpButler checks from four EU locations, and password-protected status pages. If your incident process starts with "call the on-call engineer's phone", Better Stack is built for that and we are not.

Pricing

Better Stack is modular: a responder license per person, plus add-ons for capacity and status page features. UpButler has four flat plans. A two-person team with one status page without vendor branding pays $12/month on UpButler Starter; Business adds on-call for up to 25 people at $99/month.

Moving from Better Stack

UpButler has a built-in Better Stack importer. In the dashboard open Settings → Import (or call the API below), paste a Better Stack Uptime API token, and review the dry run before anything is created. The token is used for that import only and never stored, and re-running an import only adds what is new.

Import from Better Stack
# Dry run first: lists what would be created, what already exists and what is skipped
curl -X POST https://upbutler.com/api/v1/import/preview \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $UPBUTLER_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"source":"betterstack","apiKey":"<Better Stack Uptime API token>"}'

# Then run it (a background job; poll GET /api/v1/import/jobs/<id>)
curl -X POST https://upbutler.com/api/v1/import \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $UPBUTLER_KEY" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"source":"betterstack","apiKey":"<Better Stack Uptime API token>"}'
  1. Monitors: status-code and keyword (present or absent) monitors become HTTP checks; TCP, SMTP, POP and IMAP become TCP checks; DNS monitors become DNS checks.
  2. Heartbeats are recreated with their period. Point each job at its new ping URL afterwards.
  3. Status pages come over with their sections and resources as groups and components.
  4. Skipped, with the reason shown in the preview: ping (ICMP) and UDP monitors, and Playwright scenarios, which you recreate as UpButler browser checks on Business.
  5. Not imported: on-call and notification settings. Add alert channels (email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, webhook) and, on Business, rotations and escalation policies.
  6. Your new page is live at your-name.upbutler.com right away (bring-your-own domains are rolling out, from Starter). Run both for a week, then pause the old monitors.

Prefer to let an agent drive? Connect both MCP servers and ask it to run the import and fix anything the preview skipped:

mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "upbutler": {
      "url": "https://upbutler.com/mcp",
      "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ub_..." }
    }
  }
}

If you need phone or SMS paging, keep a dedicated paging tool and let UpButler handle checks, the status page and customer updates, connected by signed webhooks. Otherwise Business-plan escalation policies can page whoever is on call.

Questions people ask

Does UpButler have on-call scheduling like Better Stack?

A lighter version. The Business plan has weekly on-call rotations with overrides and escalation policies that page the person on call by email or Telegram, or any alert channel, until someone acknowledges. Every plan can acknowledge incidents. There are no phone calls or SMS, so if you need someone woken by a phone call at 3 a.m., Better Stack (or a dedicated paging tool fed by our webhooks) is the better choice.

Can I send UpButler alerts into my on-call tool?

Yes. Webhook channels receive signed events (Standard Webhooks) for monitor state changes and incidents, which you can forward to any on-call or incident tool that accepts webhooks.

Does UpButler handle logs or traces?

No, and we do not plan to. UpButler is monitoring, status pages and incident communication. If you want logs, metrics and uptime in one bill, Better Stack is built for that.

How is pricing different?

Better Stack charges per responder license plus add-ons for extra monitors, status pages and status page features. UpButler has four flat plans: Free, Starter at $12/month, Pro at $29/month and Business at $99/month, with members, status pages, custom CSS and on-call included up to the plan limits. New workspaces start with 14 days of Pro, no card.

Do both work with AI agents?

Yes. Better Stack has an official MCP server that spans uptime, on-call and telemetry. UpButler’s MCP server has 50+ tools focused on monitors, status pages and incidents, and adds agent self-signup: an agent can create a workspace and hand a claim link to a human.
